I've been approached to do some freelance writing. This would be a new sort of thing for me; I think the project might be fun, but I don't know what would be considered a standard rate for brief articles to be published online. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to reply to me directly.

Rebecca,

I'm doing some freelance writing for industry journals based in the UK at the moment. These are not highly technical, more a journalistic features and benefits review and what's happening in the market, with a hint of opinion added. I have background knowledge but not SME.

The two rates that I have been quoted are £180 and £200 per thousand, the latter being a reasonable rate for the time taken, including research - mostly extracting information from Web sites and press releases. If you are looking at anything more technical, which would probably involve 'real' research, including discussions with SMEs, I would think you should be looking towards £250 per thousand, or whatever you consider the dollar equivalent to be (my guess, about $225).

Regards,
Ant
