Okay, I'll rudely divert this thread onto something to do with
tech writing. :-)

Background:
I'm one of the people working on some Windows-related documentation.
At one point, it instructs people how to install something in what the
document terms "the Windows system directory". The meaning of this
is the directory indicated by the value of the %WINDIR% environment
variable, typically C:\Windows, C:\WinNT, etc., depending on your version
of Windows.

Problem:
Some versions of Windows have a System or System32 directory
inside this directory, and thus interpret *that* to be the meaning of
"Windows system directory".

Question:
Is there a descriptive term that is better than "Windows system directory",
and, ideally, that is MS-sanctioned?
