John,

Let me know if I am off base with this. First, are you using Frame or Word?
The reason I ask, is that in Frame, you could create a landscape-oriented
Master Page that uses the Tabloid page media. Then just use that Master page
whenever you need to insert your diagram or table. You might even make a
recto and verso version so that you can use the appropriate Master,
depending on what side the insert falls in. (You would likely need to create
para tags that would start at the next page, so that you can get them back
onto regular US Letter paper size).

That creates the source file (obviously). For printing it to HC, check with
a local print company that has a digital press. The presses will allow you
to insert PostScript commands throughout the job (such as using a custom
page media size for specific pages - like the landscape Tabloid). The press
company can work with you on getting the correct commands for their press'
RIP. In order to access this type of print flexibility, you will need to use
a PostScript press. These allow you to insert custom page media sizes.
Higher end printers should also work, but the output will not be anywhere
near the speed of a press.

HTH
