I have used FrameMaker to produce 17 x 11 tabloid documentation containing a
mixture of CAD drawings and text. I used a two-column layout for the text
pages. We bound the books on the top (long) edge with plastic coils. We
delivered PostScript code to a printing company who then printed the manuals
with a Xerox Docutech 135. The Docutech RIP has the ability to print
double-sided pages that read left-to-right and top/bottom.
