This solution comes from the below respondent. It does exactly what I (and
apparently others) needed.
1) Double-click the line to bring the label into edit mode
2) In the toolbar, there is an options selection button to the right of the
text tool button (the letter A). Click it.
3) Select the button that looks like the letter A with a counter-clockwise
circle around it...the Text Block Tool.
4) Click it. You can now manipulate the label, including holding down your
mouse button and dragging it anywhere along the line you want...and it
sticks at that position on the line regardless of what you do with the line.
