TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
So we've got a bunch of Word documents in CVS, which we access through
WinCVS. In the docs, we insert the filenames in the headers using AutoText.
Now, AutoText takes the filenames from the File Properties dialog box.
Recently, when we've checked out a document, the filename in that dialog box
and, therefore, in the headers has had a single digit appended, such as "Buy
Low, Sell High2." Yet the filename hasn't actually changed, as shown in file
lists.
We think the filename property was changed by WinCVS to reflect its
versioning, but we haven't verified it yet. More likely, it's Word out to
get me. Again.
We can usually, but not always, replicate the behavior. It can be fixed
manually, of course, by editing the filename property, but that's just a
stopgap.
Has anyone else seen this? Does anyone have an inkling of what's happening?
