Thanks to all for suggestions on screen capture utilities and bitmap editors. Mainly I am concerned about the bitmap editor. Does anyone on this list remember a beautiful bitmap editor called MacPaint? It was bundled with the first Macs (ah, the good old days), along with MacDraw. It was so simple and elegant. You could easily erase pixels, crop images, and "lasso" images so that you didn't get a bunch of space around the image, just the image, or portion of image, itself. I would kill to have a lasso tool in a bitmap editor. MacPaint set the standard in my mind for bitmap editors. Then there was a beautiful desktop accessory (DA, to us old-time Macheads), DAPaint, I think, that was basically MacPaint made conveniently accessible from the Apple menu. It, too, was a gem.

Now, as I wander forth in the wilderness of Windows software, I cannot find anything that fulfills my bitmap editing needs as MacPaint once did. The Paint utility that comes with Windows is too simple (it doesn't even have a constrain tool) and the others, like PaintShop Pro, are so complicated that I just can't spend the time trying to use them. Can't someone just port MacPaint, circa 1986, updated with a few new file formats, to the PC? MacPaint for Windows, what a concept!
