Do the skills have to be unique before they define a profession? I suspect that many areas that are usually considered professions require skills that are common to most educated people - teaching, for example.

Possibly, a quorum definition, in which most but not all of the skills are present would be more meaninful. An example of a quorum definition might be:

To be a member of the North American elite, you must be:

- middle-class or higher
- of European descent
- male
- university educated

If you have at least 3 of these characteristics, you will be accepted as part of the elite.

(Note: while I think this definition might have some explanatory power, please don't start discussing it. It's only an example).
