I'm game.

In a nutshell, this is what a tech writer needs to succeed:

* Good communication skills (excluding writing/authoring)
* Good project management skills (excluding writing/authoring)
* Good problem solving skills (excluding writing/authoring)
* Creativity (excluding writing/authoring)
* Good command of technical concepts (excluding writing/authoring)
* Ambition/drive (excluding writing/authoring)
* Eagerness to learn (excluding writing/authoring)
* Good leadership skills (excluding writing/authoring)

Oh, and I think there's one more thing... Oh yeah...

* Ability to write/author well

IMO, there is nothing special about being a technical writer. Sure, you need
to be able to explain things well, but everything else that goes into our
jobs goes into other jobs as well. That is, if you want to succeed.
