John,
I'm not denying what you wrote:

<snip> "I think it comes down to if you want it to work, you will find a
way. It's always much easier to accept the status quo, look for reasons it
won't work and say "See? I told you", then to be creative, figure it out,
and end up with something of value."

nor am I offering what you snipped from my post as an excuse for not landing a job.....I was merely making the suggestion that some employers see those initials after one's name as the surest - and easist - path to hiring someone with skills outside their own realm of knowledge.

If you've noticed, I have not endorsed either side of the certification argument.....I am merely offering an opinion culled from reading numerous want ads. If you are hiring someone outside your own area of expertise and a given profession offers certification, the recent trend has been to list "certification" as a desireable qualification. This by no means precludes a creative, skillful, and experienced person from applying for the position and getting hired for the position without certification; but increasingly, certification is seen as a simple way for employers unfamiliar with a profession to make sure a potential hire comes equipped with a specific set of skills.

Heidi...I think it comes down to if you want it to work, you will find a
way. It's always much easier to accept the status quo, look for reasons it
won't work and say "See? I told you", then to be creative, figure it out,
and end up with something of value.

As you said...

>" Whether or not you personally think certification
>for your profession is good or bad, what becomes clear
>is that certain employers think certification matters."

The moment more of us in the field see us as more than glorified spell
checkers is the moment that we'll be getting the respect that many of us
simply scream it is due to us rather than earning it.
