Question 2 first. Why eliminate anything? Maybe to eliminate the possibility
that one industry is going to make it impossible for someone to work in any
other field. I'm thinking of maybe aeronautics and aviation. That field
might want the ability to know hydraulics. Who else does? As I said, I'm
throwing out ideas as they come.
Why design and not font? Font is part of design, but there are other parts
to design than just font. Design includes print font, online font,
electronic font. Including color. It includes handicap accessibility. They
all fall under design along with other elements. Knowledge of fonts alone
does not make you qualified to select fonts without understanding other
design elements. You didn't get hired because you know the difference
between Helvetica and Arial. You got hired because you understood the design
principles behind font selection (or did I misunderstand your question?)
