Normal = Bad
Well, actually, any predefined styles in Word equals bad for the same reason why Jo Francis Byrd pointed out. There's always some hidden gotchya that will crop up at some point. So, if you're creating a template, you might as well start from scratch. Now, if your question was about basing all your other styles on a single style, like Normal, or Body, or some other text, yeah, that's a good idea. Because if you do happen to need to change something, the styles that are based on the style you change will change too. This can be convenient, but it can also be sort of a pain if you're not careful. What I've done is based like styles on a single style. So, for instance, I have an H1 style (header) and then I base H2 and H3 on it. Or, I have a TOC1 style, then base TOC2 and TOC3 on it. That's pretty cool and it works pretty well.
