I've noticed a slight pickup in the number of openings posted on job boards. One
thing you might want to try is cold calling the companies you're interested in.
That's how I got this contract.  I *hate* cold calling, but I had to do it. I
was in my third week at WALMART, and wasn't a nice guy to be around...

I think networking and cold calling are better in this type of market than job
boards and adverts in the Sunday paper.  YMMV though...
