Hmmm, the question I have is: "Will anyone who did not follow this thread understand what we are talking about?"

I run into this problem often in translation, English terms referring to technology are often wide spread while French expressions are laughable. The first time I use a word or expression, I usually write it in French (if it is not too weird) along with the English expression.

Applied to this case it would look like this: "The product uses hook and loop (also known as Velcro(TM)) to ...". Than you can use hook and loop and expect users to understand what you mean.
