I don't think telling them that would
make them any more aware of what it is
and how it can be of use. I haven't seen
that ads, but if they convey that the product is
potentially useful, they are doing what ads
should do. 

If I wanted to tell a complete technophobe
about HTML, I would not start by telling
them what the letters stand for. In fact, I'd
avoid telling them that altogether. I'd use words
like "point" and "jump" and "link" to describe
what it is that HTML does for people who are
searching for information on a computer. Why?
Because those are words they already know.
