Sean,
I'm sure many have already chimed in with similar suggestions, but here
goes!
* Mailing list, such as this fine one.
* I keep communications open with previous workmates, and we discuss our
challenges and projects. It's basically a private mailing list.
* The STC publications help as well. I don't go to too many meetings (I
have a baby girl on the way; yes, I'm quite busy!), but when I did go,
they were great.
* I read a whole bunch o'lot o'stuff, usually online. I'll read your
standard techy pages, and follow up myself with anything I find of
interest.
As you can see, everything in here is about not staying in an insular
bubble. It's hard, it takes time, but it helps. Sometimes I don't do
nearly as good of a job as I can, but as long as you do a little bit all
the time, you'll be fine.
It's worked for me. Hopefully you find something that works for you.
