TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I'm completing my first independent tech-writing
assignment for a company I used to work for and,
frankly, I know that they are very slow about paying
bills. Our agreement calls for half-payment upon
delivery of the draft (Net 30), and the other half
after incorporating their desired changes.
My question is, should I deliver my draft simply in
Word format, which is what I wrote in, or in some
format which is protected from editing. My thinking
is to allow them to review the document in, say, PDF
format, while I keep the editable version as
protection until I receive payment. If I turn over my
editable docs, then I lose any leverage.
