TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
My preferred method (assuming I'm in control of the
illustration formats) is to place a small, recognizable
but not necessarily readable thumbnail of the full GUI
offcenter, and a "zoom-in window" (a circle or rectangle
with an arrow pointing to the location of a feature on the
screen) containing the blowup of the feature. The caption
or accompanying text then describes the action (if any)
necessary to access. One of my pet peeves is having to
decipher user docs that describe SW features and buttons
by name only when those features are accessed by clicking
on buttons that are identified in the GUI only by symbols...
