In an archived post to this list, someone
suggested "palpate" if writing for doctors, "tap"
if writing for dancers, etc.
I guess that's taking the "depends on your audience"
argument a but far, isn't it.
'Tap' seems too energetic to me, as does 'press'. You
need only to make the lightest contact with the screen.
Doesn't 'tap' assume the use of a stylus? You can
get a 'tap' more readily from a stylus than from a
fingertip, especially if you keep your nails trimmed.
I agree with you about "choose." I would need to
define the term in a conspicuous place, and even then
it might not register, as you suggest.
