I don't mind being in the cube farm, as long as they don't put me in a veal pen (that is, one of those tiny cubes in which you can barely turn around without smashing an elbow or knee into something--seem to be geared toward keeping you fat and tender).

In a previous position, I started in the cubicles with my development staff. That was fine for doing day-to-day development work, but I found that I had to find a conference room or empty office whever I had to have a one-on-one meeting or when I had HR issues with which to contend. Part of that was simply the political environment at that company. I eventually had to move to an office. In my current position, I sit in a cube, and I don't feel that the political environs are such that I'd have to worry overmuch about the discussions I have. For confidential discussions, I can still go find a room somewhere.
