Earbuds piping a well-worn CD.
I *like* sitting beside the customer support team. The phone conversations
don't bother me--if anything, it's a great place to get a grip on customer
issues and needs.
I will qualify that, though ... the people around me are very technical in
addition to being customer-focussed. If they weren't, I wouldn't have asked
to move my seat from Engineering. Yup, it was my idea, and it was quite
contingent on the circumstances. I'm glad I had the latitude to do it.
However, in the absence of this particular mix of people and operating
conditions, I would do my best to stay with the engineers.
As well, I'm sitting next to my manager now, and I find this tremendously
useful. He's a wealth of information, including technical stuff I would
otherwise need to get from the product engineers (he, too, is an engineer).
My comings and goings as an information hunter-gatherer fit in better in
this location, partly because I'm not the only one questing and partly
because I have duties to departments other than Engineering (like, to
Marketing).
