In the rule against semicolons, there may be an element of
mistrust regarding the writers' competence as much as regarding
the readers'.

But maybe the computer screen is a factor too. In a lot of
fonts, the on-screen semicolon does not show up very well.
You can tell something is there, but you can easily think
it's a comma.

Personally, I try to keep semicolons out of material that
is going onto the computer screen.
