My tech writing mentor took a LOT of online courses from RPI, and raved
about them. She really felt they were worthwhile, and felt that the
communication between herself, her instructors, and her fellow students
was excellent - something she had been concerned about prior to enrolling.
She went on to work at Microsoft for several years, then moved back east
and is now in the PhD program at RPI, where she is also teaching.
Some online courses are better than others, but from what I've heard, RPI
does it right.
