Hi There,

I must agree with what Bruce was saying in that it is what you make it to
be.

I am a technical writer and am responsible for 15-20 products. That
includes:

Help Files
Technical Manuals
Installation Manuals
Assembly Guides
Brochures and Advertisements.

I also do translation of the documents into 6 different languages, and
believe me there is no time to get bored!

I think it does help if you get into an industry that interests you.
Remember you can be a technical writer for basically any topic!
