The grid control works that way consistently and appropriately. "May" was
also used to describe several other manipulations as well. If it doesn't
work, it's because something broke in the program, not because there is some
condition that may occur where it would not operate that way.

Every time I receive content from someone, with the instruction to "pretty
it up" when I don't have the time, I do a search for the word "should" and
less often, "may".

I then buy myself time by sending it back with the instructions "And what if
it doesn't?"

Gets them every time.

I HATE weasel-word in a document. It either does or it doesn't and if it
does, there are next steps, and if it doesn't, there are different next
steps.
