You gotta remember...the reason I'm outta here is because I resigned. This
was sooner than they expected. For the last year, my manager has had it in
his mind that they were going to move to FM...the intention is still there.
It just happened before they expected it would.

The question isn't whether FM is the right tool for the task. I'm sure it
is.
The question is, as part of committing itself to using the right tool, did
the group think about the ramifications? Did they look around and say, "Do
any of us need to get basic knowledge of FM, in the unlikely event that John
moves on?"
It isn't *your* job to ask that question -- it's theirs. But from your post,
it kind of sounds like they never asked.
