Can you get the Word file and work with that? I'd think the time to index is
BEFORE you export to Quark. The art/production person will have to redo his
work, but too bad - they should have thought of that beforehand.

If the book is going to go through the art department--especially if there's a chance the page breaks will be changing--he will have to work hard to verify that the locators (the page numbers on each index entry) stay correct.

If that's the case, he may be better off creating the index *after* the rest of the book is finished.

Or just rebuild the finished manual in Word and show them that the "export
to Quark" step isn't even necessary. I did that on one job a long time
ago... they were exporting from Word to PageMaker, and they didn't believe
Word could produce the same finished work. So I did it in Word, and saved
them a lot of time and money. That was years ago though. I haven't seen
anyone use the Word-to-DTP process for a long time now.

I agree that you can probably produce the desired results directly from Word--that's what I do. I much prefer embedding the entries in the Word source and creating the index before producing PDF from within Word.

But, if he's not in control of the final pagination, I still think he's probably better off creating the index separately.
