I forgot to include a link to an article on the BBC today. Its conclusion
addresses one of the major dangers in protectionism and trying to stop the
evolution of the marketplace.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/3259761.stm
"At least one report has said that more jobs have been lost in steel
consuming industries than have been saved among steelmakers."

I'd hazard a guess that the jobs in steel consuming industries possibly pay
better than those in the steel producing industry. Which would make the
statement above a double whammy for the US economy.
