From where I sit, the only advantage of Structured FrameMaker is that it directly supports import and export of SGML/XML. You can define an "application" that specifies the mapping between the elements your markup document type and the elements of a structured FrameMaker file. Designing such a application is not easy, but once you have it, reading and writing SGML or XML is as easy as reading or writing FrameMaker's native format.

I have heard of people using Structured FrameMaker just to enforce content/presentation separation, without actually creating any markup files. I suppose that makes sense if you don't like unstructured FrameMaker's inate messiness, but are still a FrameMaker fanatic. Not that I'd care to associate with such a person....
