David: Peggy asked for the 'fastest' way to get her 'non-compliant' document into a foreign template.

The way I described *is* faster, because she'll only have to replace styles that are *not* part of the new template. All styles with the same name--Normal, Heading 1-9, TOC 1-9, Index 1-9, at least--will automatically be updated to match the new template.

If she pastes the entire document as plain text, she'll have to meticulously reapply every paragraph style and character style--even plain old boldface and italics--by hand.

She did not mention ever wanting to use her current template again or that there were other
documents that needed the same fix.

In any environment where there's a standard style sheet, and where someone has bothered to encode it into a template, and where you've beendirected to take the time to make sure your document conforms, it seems likely that future revisions would need to conform to that style sheet, too.

For less than a minute's effort, attaching the template ensures that'll happen, even after you've moved on to another project or another company.

Your solution is a good learning exercise, though.

You mean it's a good learning exercise, TOO. :)
