RE: What job did you have before you became a technical communica tor?

Before I had the actual title of 'tech writer' or 'documentation specialist'
or other iterations, I was involved in:
- university stints in:
* tutoring freshmen and soph's in math, mostly calculus and differential
equations
* assisting with chemistry library tasks
* working in a dorm cafeteria
* working in student housing offices
- electrical engineer for an engineering consulting firm in Amarillo, Texas
that specialized in power design
- technical customer support, database content management, and instructional
designer for a small company that is now a major Internet service provider.

After being laid off approx 6 years ago, I did some skill analysis and
decided that I enjoyed writing as well as learning scientific or
technological info/principles....and tech comm was a good combo of the two.

If you had another career before you became a technical communicator, what
was it and why did you decide to pursue technical communication?
