A lot depends on the corporate culture, but I'd be
wary of giving an SME the opportunity to cut the
writer out of the loop. Given access to the draft,
the impatient SME can do the revision and decide
there is no need to waste time consulting with
the writer on it. The SME can then resist further
consultation-- either for lack of time or for
reasons of ego-involvement in the writing-- and
in the worst case, again depending on the
corporate culture, the SME can bypass the
writer and send the document off directly
to the customer.

Did I mention that a lot depends on the
corporate culture?
