Yeah, that's what I thought, too. Then someone told me about the keyboard shortcuts for superscripts and subscripts:

Toggle in and out of subscript mode: Ctrl-= (hold down Ctrl key and equal sign key, then release)
Toggle in and out of superscript mode: Ctrl-Shift-= (hold down Ctrl key, Shift key, and equal sign key, then release).

So the sequence is Ctrl-Shift-=, 2, Ctrl-Shift-= to get a superscript 2. This is MUCH faster, if you have to do a bunch of them, than either formatting from the font dialog or copying and pasting.
