Ah, but the better analogy about adopting DocBook would be to say if you adopt
the dog are you adopting all canines? No, you're only adopting one instance of
one sub-branch of the canine family. (That's the crux of Mark's argument I
believe.)

Docbook is only one XML instance. Adopting Docbook IS adopting an XML (or SGML)
instance and approach. The same can be said of adopting HTML.

When you do decide to adopt a dog (the kid analogy really doesn't fit in
anyway), do you just adopt the first dog to come along? The dog that most people
have? Or do you look into which dog best fits your needs? It may be possible to
find a small Great Dane (use Docbook or adapt it to your use), but it may be
advisable to get a Dachshund or Jack Russell instead. Or you may be better off
with a cat! ;)
