Hi. Having written numerous fiction and technical books, money really depends on what percentage of royalties you are given and how many books sell. Usually you get an advance, your royalties are not given until the advance has been paid off. I wrote a trade book that only made $50K, my advance was $3500 and it took 10 solid, long days to write. I have not made any royalties.

The HTML Bible 4.0 that I worked on has sold over 6 million copies and my royalty rate was 7.5% with a $10K advance. I made good maoney off that book and still do. My fiction, on the other hand... it's like being a musician, if you have a following (Judtih Krantz, etc) you can make money, otherwise I think the profit for the author is dubious.

I don't know much about the world of publishing, but can someone give me some decent profit ranges for a first time author? Those of you who pursue publishing for fiction or non-fiction works for the commercial environment (to me, that is that I can walk in to a book store and buy or order the book), what type of profit is there. I am not particularly talking about magazine articles or recurring pieces of work.

My current understanding is that it depends on the number of copies printed and sold. Do publishers continue to print as long as their is decent demand? Does the author sign to receive X% of the sales? Is there money up front from the publisher, then X% of sales? If you sign a contract with a publisher for X number of books, does profit increase?
