I have been checking a number of web sites for recommended books on
technical writing. I am a technical indexer looking to expand into
technical writing as part of my home-based business. ...
Some good reads and good advice for online learning would be most
appreciated.

My book list starts here http://www.jeanweber.com/books/index.htm
It covers books on tech writing, tech editing, and several related topics.

If you'd like to suggests additions (or deletions <g>) to the list on indexing, that would be great!

As for online learning... do you mean formal or informal? I learn a lot by finding one or more websites in a particular area of interest, reading everything they've posted, then following links to related sites. A good place to start is with the Techwhirl site itself, which has a lot of good articles (check the "Magazine" section). Because I'm interested in online help, I use the WritersUA site a lot. http://www.winwriters.com/ For technical editing, I recommend starting with my own site <grin>.

I've had no experience with more formal online learning, but I've noted that several organisations (including the STC, which you say you've joined) offer phone/internet seminars that might be useful.
