Put on yer ice skates Peggy, and be ready to break some bones in that double axle <this actually happened to me 3 years ago, I will never wear ice skates again!>

A good tech writer, in my highly biased opinion and 18 years in the industry is:

1) Put your work away for at least a day so you can edit with a fresh pair of eyes.

2) Ask for help in searching out errors.

3) Realize that web site writing is different than linear, hard copy writing. It's more like online help.

4) Get clarification from your superiors whenever something is confusing, impossible to do, etc.

5) I was going to end with a tongue in cheek about morons, but I don't think I'm a moron, just a b*tch. A tenacious one at that. So, my ending advice, if you're passionate about what you do you will be successful. That may sound naive, but for me I've found it to be true. One publishing credit when I was 7 led to 50+ publishing credits by the time I was 18, and a path laid out for me doing something I feel passionate about: working with words.

I would tend to agree. How many tech products have I bought during my over
three decades of masquerading as an adult only to be frustrated up to the
eyeballs with how little the accompanying manuals actually helps in my
conquering the features and functions of the software/tech gadget. I have just started a new job doing technical writing for a website. I've
never done tech writing before. If someone was to name the top 3-10 things that make for a GOOD tech writer,
what would they be? I am green, feel like I have on a new pair of ice-skates
and weak ankles, but, I do want to succeed. Thanks!
