There is a well-traveled boulevard near where I live. I drove it often
until the township put up large address signs in the median. These
signs were cobalt blue with black lettering. At night the reflecterized
letters were perfectly visible but during the day they were unreadable.
It irritated me to no end that the township had wasted my tax money on
these signs without consulting anyone who could grasp the concept of
high visibility. I also began to realize how much time I spent trying
to read the signs while driving and became concerned that the boulevard
was becoming unsafe as I, and other drivers were being distracted by
trying to acquire necessary information from these poorly conceived
signs. Eventually I found a new route to travel. Several months later
I found that the signs had been repainted a lovely Hershey brown with
white letters which were perfectly readable day or night. Now, when I
drive the boulevard, I'm only distracted by the desire for chocolate.
