That's the thing (or at least part of it). Rarely have I seen or received a
lack of help here (or in other places) when it has been asked for (and
someone in the particular community knows the answer).
But we all act on our own individual needs. Selfishness drives us all the
time--but that is not necessarily a bad thing. ("Selfish" has not just a
negative connotation any more than "criticism" does). A healthy amount of
selfishness, of drive for our individual needs, is what keeps us fed, keeps
a roof over our heads, etc. It's also what makes us keep the cogs of society
free from gunk that would otherwise gum up the works.
