I've never been a school teacher, but I have been a university instructor, 
which is not that different.

In my experience, by the time that most people reach first year university, 
they have been thoroughly traumatized by people wielding red ink. At the sight 
of red ink, even the nicest or best motivated freeze up like something about to 
be roadkill that's just seen your headlights. And then they stop paying 
attention to the comments.

OK, maybe I exaggerate. But the reaction is there, even among many professional 
writers. Use another color, and people are far more likely to pay attention to 
the comments instead of their own horror at the Color of Doom.
