If I'm really concerned about a document being misconstrued as being
complete, I'll add a text box to the header, so that at the top of every
page it says "DRAFT COPY ONLY" or something along those lines. Just did
that yesterday, as a matter of fact, on a sales doc that was NOT ready to
be sent to the customer.

At a former job, I finally had to put "Confidential" in bold letters on any draft. One of our marketing people was constantly trying to send out my documents before he even read them!

I write internal documents only in my current job, so we just number the documents. Documents before signing are "Draft A," "Draft B," etc. When the draft is ready for signing, it becomes "Version 1.0". Sometimes, the version will be up to 1.5 or so before the final document is actually signed, since it seems to always get revised at the last minute. (I work with scientists; any two of them will have at least three opinions.)
