YMMV, but I've managed global departments whose members
are separated by datelines and language and culture as
well as distance. The communications methods between team
members and dept management are different and more complex,
but other than time lags and occaisional difficulties in
figuring out what people are saying and what they actually
mean, I don't find the techniques significantly different
from those I'd apply to teams sited in different buildings
on the same campus. Maybe it's because I'm upfront
about my expectations, don't micromanage and don't start
off assuming people who are professionals will have to be
treated differently just because they come from different
cultures and speak different languages. Or maybe some of
them are just scared to death of me. Damned if I know.
