manuscript length and timetable.

Hi all,

I'm working on my first book proposal and ran into a couple things I
find very hard to answer beforehand.

- "Proposed book length." Apart from the fact that I simply don't know
yet, how much is 1 page? Doesn't that depend on the page size, thus the
size of the book? Or should I just assume Letter format, 12pt font? Is
this including illustrations and diagrams? In other words: any advice?

- "Time needed to complete the manuscript." I usually write articles
ranging from 3 to 10 pages, which takes me about 3 to 5 days (depending
a lot on how many hours I write per day). What is a 'normal' or
acceptable amount of time to spend on a manuscript with 400 pages? Would
ten to twelve months be extremely out of the ordinary?
