Precisely what I was asking for, and thanks for a
fine lucid explanationl. The XSD route is
ultimately where I need to go with this.

Thanks to David also, it was the absence of an
ELEMENT #REQUIRED analogous to ATTRIBUTE #REQUIRED
that got me wondering how to get the parser
involved at the level of an ELEMENT value.
