Well, the marketing dweebs might reply that Microsoft moved to an XML-based
file format for its latest incarnation of Word.

But a real reason is that the TC field is moving toward designing content
semantically, and a markup language based on or derived from XML is a real
possibility.

Whether or not you're planning on single sourcing your material (and plans
can change), it should have no bearing on whether learning XML may be
useful.
