Indeed, many programmers are charged with the task of updating existing code
for new versions or bug fixes. Economic and QA realities tend to require
that the programmer change as little as necessary in code that otherwise
works. This is especially so in customized software (the environment where
I've worked); perhaps less so in retail software.
