Both of these observations are true. The best learning in classes I've taken
and classes I've taught happened when the instructor set a tone of fun
exploration - that is, if the students picked up on it and ran with it.

Tying this in with the other training thread we have going on, this is the
magic that you have to try to create in a class, and you can only do it
through a combination of a) mastery of the subject, b) sympathetic
understanding of the students and the issues that they face (including the
ones Susan mentioned), c) a dedicated effort to make even dreary subjects as
interesting as possible, and d) making the students the ones in charge of
the learning through lots of hands-on exercises and simulations, and little
lecturing. Reading the File menu options from a slide is none of these.
