That may apply to some people, some of the time, but
many people join gyms because pushups don't do what
they want/need, and perhaps their knees disagree with
jogging. The gym provides equipment (additional tools
and approaches) that let the user get better results,
faster.

Similarly, the aftermarket books provide something that
the "free"/included documentation did not (additional
tools and approaches), and enable the user to get more
out of their time and effort.
