Has it really been more than a month since we publicly agreed to disagree? <g> Actually, we probably aren't disagreeing, since you said "standard" typography.

While I'll agree with you that there are typographers who really know their stuff, they're vastly outnumbered by the amateurs and incompetents, many of whom are trying to redefine standard practices in their own image. Fortunately, the experts have by and large come up with rules of thumb that work well, and most people have learned to follow those rules. More to the point, the really good typographers actually read what they lay out to ensure that they enjoy the reading experience--and if they don't, they alter the typography. This appraoch is too rare in my experience.
