In my purely anecdotal :) experience, many professional publication
designers will often choose what "looks way better" over what "works way
better." It ain't always the same thing.

This is not to say that amateurs are better; most amateurs will choose "none
of the above." But the example being discussed (spacing) is *exactly* the
sort of thing that lends itself to experimentation.
